Her laughter pealed like a bell, entirely too loud for the reddening XXX. "You must be the YYY," she chuckled.
Book ?
XXX ? (a name)
YYY ? (an adjective used here as a noun)
"she" ?

Bonus: Why did she laugh ?

The answer to the first question is essentially equivalent to the answers to the second and third one together....

Oh, come on! There are not so many books the title of which contain a name and something on which to make an adjective that can be used as a noun !

In everyone's defense, your second stating of the hint was much more clear than the first one. But then, I was thinking it was Berry in Passage thinking that Whit was Fawn's husband (when they first meet). However, with your restatement of the hint, I know that's wrong. I'll give people another day or two to get it though. :)

Book ? Ethan of Athos
XXX ? (a name) Ethan

Bonus: Why did she laugh ? Unfortunately, my copy of Miles, Mystery and Mayhem is hiding, so I'll leave to bonus to someone who can find theirs.

Next quote:
"Much as I hate to admit it, this notion of Xxx's would work. Temporarily. It's the long-term consequences that terrify me."

Quote extension:
"Given that you're making me complicit as your Second, maybe Yyy would be far enough...no, farther than that..." He shook himself out of his paralysis and turned to the women. "Much as I hate to admit it, this notion of Xxx's would work. Temporarily. It's the long-term consequences that terrify me."
Book?
Speaker?
Xxx?
What notion?
What consequences?

Yyy is a place with two words (I suppose it should be Yyy Yyy, but then that could be confusing).

I'm thinking of Ivan speaking to Tej and Rish in Captain Vorpatril's Alliance.

But think of this as a hint (if correct), because I'm stumped for the other elements in the quote.

You've got one right. I refuse to say which one on the grounds that it might be helpful. :P Given the obvious conclusion (that it's the Vorkosiverse), I can also add the hint that Yyy is "Old Earth." Not that it helps much. I'll also throw in free information that they aren't on Barrayar at this point in the text.

Ah-ha!
It's still Ivan, but he's in the IVF-clinic (in Cetaganda) talking to Rian, Pel and the other Haut ladies of the Star Crèche.
This is still from a Bas memory (mine, that is), and still incomplete.
But I still hope the rest will still slowly resurface to Haut level.

Nope. Now they're all wrong (I consider that another hint, by the way).

Hint: The speaker did not appear much, if at all (I don't remember any appearances, but I might have forgotten), in the series until after Miles became an Auditor.

So it's either Captain Vorpatril's Alliance, or Ivan speaking to the women, and we've removed the idea that it's Ivan speaking. So, the obvious conclusion is...

Well, I guessed the correct answer as soon as EPS posted his original one but I waited for him to find it too..

But a lot of time has elapsed since, so:

Book : Captain'sVorpatril Alliance
Speaker : Byerly
XXX : Ivan
what notion : marrying Tej using an economy-size box of cereal to keep her for being deported as illegal immigrant
what consequences ? well, all the consequences of Ivan getting married with a Jacksonian fugitive (and By probably did not even expect Falco's reaction and certainly not the hunt for the Cetagandan war treasure)

Since EPS's original answer was the trigger for me to find it, I think it is fair to share the sherlock half-and-half

That's correct (though I think Byerly's worries were more Lady Vorpatril-centered). Since you got the majority of the quote, you get the next quote, but I agree that it seems fair to split the Sherlock between the two of you (and much easier than King Solomon's baby splitting).

Well, you are right, I should have put Alys on top of Byerly's fears.

My web connection is not as good as I would like it. So maybe it would be simpler for me to leave the next quote to EPS (with the usual sub-rule in this case, namely that after EPS's quote is found and a new one is posted, the ping-pong 5-days exclusion rule applies to me and not to him).

Tej and Ivan went to a very remote planet with little wormhole traffic for Ivan's punitive diplomatic assignment.
From their house on a tropical island they have a lovely view over the ocean. Also over their private swimming pool.

Now for the questions:

1. On which planet is Ivan's posting?

2. What is Ivan's job designation (or diplomatic rank)?

3. What is Ivan's routine job schedule?

4. With the blue Adriatic-like sea just a few steps away, why do they want a maintenance-requiring swimming pool?

5. What beverage are Tej and Ivan sipping by the swimming pool? With a little umbrella in it?

Try to answer from memory, and look in the book as a last resort only.

Maybe a little hint would be useful:
The book is "Captain Vorpatril's Alliance".

I think everyone else must be on vacation/moving with books packed in boxes/ignoring us or something. I can remember some of the information, but not all of it. I'll post what I remember on Monday if no one else does.

Well, in fact a also remember part of hte answers but not all, but normally I am not allowed to answer to this at all since I gave up the chance to ask.
But if SPetty's answers do not fully satisfy EPS, I'll wait another few days (5?) and try to complete them with what I remember, to unblock the game. Meanwhile, SPetty, you can answer as soon as you want, no reason for you to wait.
