Here's a bit more of the surrounding text:
"Here, XXX. This is for you to keep. Don't lose it"

The card had no markings at all. XXX turned it over curiously, and looked his inquiry at YYY.

"This card will code you in to my personal comconsole channel."
Book?
Who is YYY (speaking)?
Who is XXX (being spoken to)?

Welcome! :D
Sorry I answered too early. ;)
Since risi just found my quote I had to wait 5 days to answer hers, and I waited just a little bit more. Had I known I'd had waited even more!!!
But stay tuned! I'll post a new one as soon as risi acknowledges it. Though I am positive I am right it is nevertheless the etiquette on this game. My new quote is ready, so as soon as she posts and I see it, I'll post at once.

Here we go
Maybe we ought to send him to the salt mines for two weeks every year, to keep him happy and content with his regular job.
Italics means this is thought, not uttered.

Book?
Who thinks this?
Who is "he"?

Bonus:
What was "he" doing (I mean, at that time, not his regular job)? Was it really as bad as salt mines?

Book= The Vor Game
Who Thinks this= Miles (of course)
He= Gregor

This refers to when Gregor does odd electrical jobs (installing light fixtures) as "Greg" on one of the new stations near Vervain (don't think it was Vervain's station, but it's the only planet name I can remember off the top of my head) after he tries to jump off the balcony on Komarr.

Right?

Great to have, not jusa a newcomer, but such a brilliant newcomer!

One and a half sherlock for you.
You are to post the next quote, and then you are not allowed to answer the quote after it, until it gets "cold" after 5 days. If someone else finds it, you can play normally. Also you'll have to award a sherlock to the person who'll find your quote. Just go to this thread to see how it is done. ;)

Next quote:
"You will never regret having done so. But you may deeply regret not having done so."
Who's speaking?
To Whom?
In what context?
and which book?

I'm off to bed, so verification may not happen immediately. I hope it hasn't been done yet, as I didn't get a chance to go through all 17 pages (just the first 3, and the last 2).

Well, I'm really tired so I'm just going with what springs to mind without verifying it first. :(

I think this is Cordelia, speaking to Mark about going in to talk to Aral after his heart event in the woods, which would make it Mirror Dance.

And, no, I don't think it has been done yet!

XXX frowned wearily. "It started out so simply. Almost as simple as the YYY job. Then things went wrong. Then things went very wrong. . . ."
Who is XXX?
What is YYY?
Who is being spoken to?
In what context?
And which book?

XXX= Miles
YYY= "Jackson's Whole job", meaning the story of Labyrinth
speaking to Illyan
trying to justify the huge equipment loss on Dagoola IV
in the collection Borders of Infinity, "glueing pages", between Labyrinth and the novella The Borders of Infinity
Human is as human does....Animals don't weep, Nine

I'm afraid that now that there are three of us, Suzette, you and I, nothing will be hard enough to last long ;)

OK, what about
God, I'm in love, thought XXX.Brother XXX wants YOU for the Reformation Army... then got hold of his thoughts. Here, now, was the make-or-break point for his scheme, and all the persiflage, verbal misdirection, charm, chutzpah, and bullshit he could muster weren't going to be enough, not even tied up with a big blue bow.
Book?
Who is XXX?
Who is this object of XXX's love?

Bonus:
- describe XXX' scheme
- what other character will XXX also (or rather, even more) fall in love with about that time?

I knew right off the bat it was Borders of Infinity, but it took actually looking. Of course, XXX is Miles (it was the "Brother XXX wants YOU" that clicked it as Borders, by the way). I had to look up to see if the object of his love was Beatrice or Tris. It's Tris, as the one that Miles believes will be able to be one of his containment camp (and later Maralican resistance) leaders, along with Oliver. All of this is on Dagoola IV, not long after the very memorable hat conversation. :)

(The other character that Miles falls in love with is Beatrice. Or at least I presume, since he's dreaming about her.)

So the Sherlocks will get awarded faster now that there are three of us playing? ;)

Correct on all counts, next qote and one and a half sherlocks.

Well, now there are three experts I think sherlocks are really going to go quite fast!
Or maybe, if the three of us (risi, you and me) want to attract some others (Blackwing found a few quotes, so did Ghost, Kvetch, marcyb, clong, maybe some others I forgot; if Reede Kullervo comes back thhere will be four real experts) we could unofficially impose upon ourselves to wait a bit more. But the official rules are, if Y answers X's quote, X cannot answer Y's quote before 5 days then Z answers Y's quote, there is no time delay for X to answer Z's quote even if the total time is much shorter.

So post a new one and risi can answer as soon as she wants.

All righty then. New quote is:
"Why are you wearing slippers?"
Who is speaking?
Who is wearing the slippers?

And of course, what book is it from?

Suzette

PS I just made it a wee bit harder, because voralfred thought it was too easy as it was posted originally. Hope that's ok. :)

Pilot Officer Mayhew is speaking . . . to Captain Cordelia Naismith! This is when she is trying to arrange transportation off of Beta Colony before they force her into therapy. The book is Shards of Honor, of course.

One of the things I love is the subtle way the books intertwine. This early meeting with Mayhew, who later meets Miles, is one of those connections! Whether accidental or deliberate, only Lois knows! But it's these little tidbits that make re-reading so much fun! :D

I didn't see the earlier "easy" post, but I must say this had me stumped for a little bit. I immediately thought of the Professora, wearing slippers coming off the jumpship, but Ekaterin never asks about why she's wearing them. Then I thought it was Miles... but when? Finally, I remembered Cordelia! Good one, Suzette!

That's right! The original had the followup line in the book, which mentioned that Arde was a Pilot Officer, which, as voralfred mentioned, was a dead giveaway, even without the name.

If it were Miles, it would have been in the Vor Game when Cavilo sent him out in the bod pod to the Ariel.

Anyway, one sherlock to you, and you're up for posting the next quote! :)

I got it.
I recognized the book at first glance, and knew at once what part of the book it was, the person spoken to I also knew at once, I had just a small hesitation on the speaker, but my first choice was the good one. Then I went to the encounter I was thinking of, was disappointed not to find it at the beginning of the dialogue ("Just so" was indeed there, but not the remainder), but I read on, and just a bit further down ...Bingo!
But if I post now, it won't be much fun. So I'll just wait a bit before posting.

But, SPetty, if you think I'll let five days go by so you can post before I do, you can forget about it :D

Oh, you have much more self-control than I do... my only hope of holding off is to not check right away. Or to be stumped! Once I have the answer I just have to post it.

Who is speaking? Speaker Karal
Who is being spoken to? Miles
Which book? Mountains of Mourning
The Princess Bride.
Not just your basic, average, everyday, ordinary, run-of-the-mill, ho-hum fairy tale.
