"God knows what they think I do in my spare time."
"Do you really want to know?" Yyy asked, Yyy's eyes alight.
"Later," Xxx muttered out of the corner of Xxx's mouth.
Book?
Who is Xxx (or I)?
Who is Yyy?
On which planet was this conversation?
Xxx is also pronoun, like Xxx's and Yyy's. Yyy is name :-).

Got it!! :D

The book is Brothers in Arms
Xxx is Miles
Yyy is Elli
The planet is Earth

I thought it was Elli and Miles on Earth but when I went to the passage where I thought it was, I couldn't find it. I had thought it was a private conversation, but it actually takes place much earlier than I thought and during the initial meeting with Galeni (pg 18 in my edition).

Good quote! There was just a hint of possibility that it could have been Aral and Cordelia, so when I couldn't find it where I expected, I had to chase down those possibilities. I do like a challenge!

It was equally clear that his wits had gone away on the road as beggar boys, just now. He might babble or rave or hallucinate, but he did not lie.

OK, here's a hint: it is NOT part of the Vorkosigan saga.

OK, here's a bit more of the quote:
She had no doubt that the man before her was capable of clever and subtle lies, when he had his wits about him. It was equally clear that his wits had gone away on the road as beggar boys, just now. He might babble or rave or hallucinate, but he did not lie.

Guesswork here, I don't have a copy of "Paladin of Souls" with me.

I'm just trying:
book: "Paladin of Souls"
whose wits: Lord Illvin's
whose judgment: not sure what you mean, I suppose who is thinking this quote? Dowager Royina Ista
who else is present: I forgot his name, but he is the half-witted (because he has been damaged by a demon) servant who is totally loyal to Lord Illvin, and who recovers his mind later, a former Chalionese officer with a rather bad reputation.

Yes!!

The groom's name was Goram, but your description was so complete that the name is hardly necessary. :D

Thanks.
Here it goes:
"He was in his forties. And he was XXX." So am I, now. Why doesn't it work for me like that?

Book?
Who is "He"?
Who is "I"?
To whom is the first part told? (The second part, in italics, is a thought).
XXX is not a character, since "He" was XXX and now so is "I". So what is XXX?

Bonus:
1) To what question is the first part the answer? So you can answer by memory, I'm not asking a verbatim form of the question, just the general meaing of the question?
2) Why did whoever asked the question, ask it? Again here I expect jsut a general idea. Besides, there is no explicit quote to that effect, just a general idea.

OK, a longer quote:
"Yet no one questioned YYY's choice?" ZZZ jerked up his chin in bafflement."He was in his forties. And he was XXX." So am I, now. Why doesn't it work for me like that?

Book?
Who is "He" (or YYY)?
Who is "I" (or ZZZ)?
To whom is the first part told? (The second part, in italics, is a thought).
XXX is not a character, since "He" was XXX and now so is "I". So what is XXX?

SO now the bonus is:
1) What choice of YYY's could have been questioned?
2) Why did whoever asked the question, ask it? Again here I expect just a general idea. Besides, there is no explicit quote to that effect, just a general idea.[/quote]

Oh, it's not that hard!

ZZZ's tic is characteristic. From ZZZ you can deduce what XXX is and thus who YYY is (I'm asking for the character, not the exact appelation in the quote).
Then use the bonus questions. What choice of YYY's could be questioned? And who could be interested in any adverse reactions to this choice?
And from that, get the book.

Hint: the latter character appears in just that one book.

A still longer quote:
"Yet no one questioned YYY's choice?"
ZZZ jerked up his chin in bafflement."He was in his forties. And he was XXX." So am I, now. Why doesn't it work for me like that?
"Her background made no difference?"
"She was VVV. Is VVV. (...) "

Book?
Who is "He" (or YYY)?
Who is "I" (or ZZZ), namely the character who speaks second and last?
Who speaks first and third?.
XXX is not a character, since "He" was XXX and now so is "I". So what is XXX?
but now the main question has a further component: who is "She"?"

And now the bonus is:
1) What choice of YYY's could have been questioned?
2) Why did whoever asked the question, ask it? Again here I expect just a general idea. Besides, there is no explicit quote to that effect, just a general idea.
3) VVV is an adjective, not a noun. What adjective?

Finally I found it! I kept thinking that ZZZ is Kou but of course he isn't. Including the "she" in the quote put me back to right track.

Book? the Vor Game
Who is "He" (or YYY)? Aral Vorkosigan (your father)
Who is "I" (or ZZZ), namely the character who speaks second and last? Miles
Who speaks first and third?. Cavilo
XXX is not a character, since "He" was XXX and now so is "I". So what is XXX? Lord Vorkosigan
but now the main question has a further component: who is "She"?" Cordelia

And now the bonus is:
1) What choice of YYY's could have been questioned? Marrying an off-worlder.
2) Why did whoever asked the question, ask it? Again here I expect just a general idea. Besides, there is no explicit quote to that effect, just a general idea. Cavilo wanted to know if she could be accepted by the Vor.
3) VVV is an adjective, not a noun. What adjective? Betan.

He had thought leading men into battle against impossible odds to be the most fearsome task of a XXX, but this new impossibility enlightened him vastly.

Here is more of the quote:
If YYY fell into his judgment out of sheer weariness, well, he would not be the first man or XXX to do so. He had thought leading men into battle against impossible odds to be the most fearsome task of a XXX, but this new impossibility enlightened him vastly.
What book?
Who is YYY/he?
What is XXX?

Well, I tried for days and days to find this in the Vorkosigan Saga without success. But now it sounds different.
So pure guess:
Book: Curse of Chalion
He: Cazaril
XXX= officer ?
but it should be "an officer" not "a XXX" so XXX=captain? or any other word carrying the same idea, a military rank or any other word carrying authority.

Well, you are correct on two points: it is not the Vorkosigan saga and LMB does know the proper use of a/an. The rest of your guesses are wrong. I will also add that, AFAIK, the TSK books are still off-limits for the quote game. So, now it should be easy!

Well, that narrows it down to "Paladins of souls" and "Hallowed Hunt";
There was one place in _PoP_ where I looked for it and did not find it. If not there, I don't know where else.
So _HH_? but I do not have it!
If anyone wants to use my efforts to conclude, (s)he is welcome. Since I am still baffled I consider this question as still open for anyone who knows better than I do

C'mon, Voralfred! You've narrowed down the book, surely the rest of it can be guessed, er, deduced in true Sherlock style! You're deductions about XXX being a rank carrying authority are a good beginning. Now you have the additional clue about judgment...

Don't give up!

Well, not finding it where I looked for it in "PoP" does not mean it is not there...
Assuming it really is not then

Book: Hallowed Hunt

Then the probability is high that YYY= Ingrey

But I don't have _HH_, I read it only once (borrowed from a friend) and I don't remember the quote.

Ingrey was the chief of his kin, if I remember well (I'm not even sure), but it was a minor kin.
So XXX ? Chief, captain, lord (not officer because of a/an) ....
They don't have formal military ranks to go through, (general etc), captain is generic enough to exist in _HH_.
I' m at a loss.
Also I have no idea what impossibility is discussed here. To get rid of his wolf?
