Re: LMB Quote Game
I'll post a new quote tomorrow, after I have a chance to look through my books.
Waiting patiently for the next Lois McMaster Bujold book.
Re: LMB Quote Game
Next quote:
What was the noise?
What was going on in there?
Book?"What was that noise? What's going on in there?"

A lil' hint, maybe?SPetty wrote:Next quote:Book?"What was that noise? What's going on in there?"

Re: LMB Quote Game
Ok, a hint. The person speaking does not appear in any other book. It is not a major character in any book(the person making the noise, however, IS a main character).

Maybe a slighter bigger hint..... ?SPetty wrote:Ok, a hint. The person speaking does not appear in any other book. It is not a major character in any book(the person making the noise, however, IS a main character).

An extension then:
What was the noise?
What was going on in there?
Book?Breathing silently through her open mouth, she drew her stunner again and prepared for whatever might come through the oval door to the main engineering bay.
"What was that noise? What's going on in there?"
"Throw in a grenade and seal the door."
What was the noise?

Maybe I ought to send him a private message with the correct answer?
Re: LMB Quote Game
You could do that. In fact, it might be fun to send all the participants the correct answer, just to see who checks their messages first.
Though I've eliminated two whole series of books with the grenade and engineering bay doors. That only leaves, what, 17?, books to look through. Piece of cake!

I know this one! And, of course, I'm not eligible to answer. Yet.

Re: LMB Quote Game
What do you mean, not eligible? The anti-ping-pong rule is only for 5 days, starting from the original posting of the quote. A hint does not restart the forbidden period. You have been eligible since November 27th !JKCade wrote:I know this one! And, of course, I'm not eligible to answer. Yet.

Whoot! I forgot what the rules were, shame on me for being gone so long.
Ok, here we go:
Breathing silently through her open mouth, she drew her stunner again and prepared for whatever might come through the oval door to the main engineering bay.
"What was that noise? What's going on in there?"
"Throw in a grenade and seal the door."
Book? Shards of Honor
What was the noise? Cordelia has just shot a man with a stunner.
What was going on in there? Cordelia is on a imaginary (self-appointed) mission to negotiate terms with the portion of the General Vorkraft's crew who are attempting to mutiny,
and she has to get thru this particular guard to get to the mutineer's (?) leader.

You are correct of course!

Re: LMB Quote Game
Next quote :
XXX ?
YYY ?
what is "this stuff" ?
If you answer from memory, it is OK if you just say unambiguously who XXX and YYY are, even if you do not give the exact wording in the book.
Book ?“Is it safe to leave this stuff alone?” asked XXX.
YYY shrugged. “If it’s not safe to leave, it’s not safe to stay with, now is it?”

“Excellent idea,” said YYY. “Certainly.”
“Is it safe to leave this stuff alone?” asked XXX.
YYY shrugged. “If it’s not safe to leave, it’s not safe to stay with, now is it?”
“That’s…a point,” said XXX reluctantly. Xxx didn’t say what kind.

- XXX, YYY, ZZZ and the "stuff" itself appear only in this book
- however, the legitimate "owner" (an entity, not an individual), of the "stuff" is mentioned in other books.
Bonus:
1/2 point for each "essentially distinct" mention of this "owner" in a different book
To avoid random listing, a minimal context is demanded; therefore, there is one book from which two distinct 1/2 point bonuses can be obtained.

XXX, YYY and ZZZ are related. Though XXX and ZZZ were raised as siblings, ZZZ has about twice as many genes in common with YYY as XXX.
The question now becomes :“Great,” said ZZZ. “Now can we go to lunch?”
He didn’t say what kind.

Why has ZZZ twice as many genes from YYY than XXX?
The bonus is unchanged.

Okay. Back to Mendel's peas and Morgan's fruit flies.

You won't find the reason in Mendel's work, nor in Morgan's one. This should be a rather strong hint....E Pericoloso Sporgersi wrote:So now we have to refresh our "genetics" too?voralfred wrote: ...

The bonus is unchanged.

YYY is XXX's grandmother. So XXX has 1/4 of YYY's genes.
XXX and ZZZ are just two of a larger set of characters raised as siblings. One subset is composed of YYY's grandchildren (with 1/4 of YYY's genes). The members of the other subset have about half of YYY's genes, like ZZZ. If you guess the answer and want to answer from memory without finding the exact page, instead of an unambiguous designation of ZZZ I'll accept any other member of the subset to which ZZZ belongs, or a generic designation for that subset. Note that I do not offer this option for XXX. That I do not is a further, and last, hint.
This should really help !

Re: LMB Quote Game
Well, if you're going to be like that about it, I suppose I can go look up the names. *rustle*
Book: Captain Vorpatril's Alliance
ZZZ is Pearl
YYY Is Grandmama
XXX is Amiri
This stuff is the Mycoborer
I recognized the quote fairly quickly, mostly from "if it's not safe to leave, it's not safe to stay with" line, which was memorable to me. While there are lots of things in the Vorkosiverse that are not very safe to leave or stay with, few people mention it. I put off answering because I couldn't remember names at all.
