YYY is XXX's grandmother. So XXX has 1/4 of YYY's genes.
XXX and ZZZ are just two of a larger set of characters raised as siblings. One subset is composed of YYY's grandchildren (with 1/4 of YYY's genes). The members of the other subset have about half of YYY's genes, like ZZZ. If you guess the answer and want to answer from memory without finding the exact page, instead of an unambiguous designation of ZZZ I'll accept any other member of the subset to which ZZZ belongs, or a generic designation for that subset. Note that I do not offer this option for XXX. That I do not is a further, and last, hint.

I recognized the quote fairly quickly, mostly from "if it's not safe to leave, it's not safe to stay with" line, which was memorable to me. While there are lots of things in the Vorkosiverse that are not very safe to leave or stay with, few people mention it. I put off answering because I couldn't remember names at all.
