To whom does the quotation refer? (i.e. who has that much self-control?)
Baronne Bharaputra's clone.

What is causing the secret strain?
The girl knows that she is to be sacrificed to extend the Baronne's life.

I'll let you correct it, to avoid any misunderstandings.

Of course, I gave it to Koothrapalli. I wouldn't give it to Leonard, nor to Sheldon ! If only Penny was playing...
Speaking of Penny, I was about to post a nice joke, but it is already on the forum

Ekaterin

What is causing the secret strain?
Kidnapped and locked up by the conspirators in Komarr, she keeps a cool front to avoid additional stress to the Professora Vorthys.

So I'm not entirely up on the rules. Am I allowed to make multiple guesses in one post?

Just in case I am, here are a couple guesses while we wait for Orchestrali to confirm/deny EPS's suggestion:

-Ekaterin -- secretly strained in Komarr with living with her horrible husband who refuses to be treated for his (and his son's) genetic disease.

-Fawn -- secretly strained in Beguilement with her pregnancy/miscarriage.

Anyone care to brainstorm? I am inclined to think it's Ekaterin, as Miles frequently comments on her remarkable self-control.

Sorry for taking so long, guys. I've been having a rough time. Secretly strained, you know.

It does sound rather like Ekaterin, doesn't it? Well, it isn't her. Not Fawn either. Here's an expansion.
Maybe he could persuade XXX to take him home early, after her one dance. But she seemed to be working the crowd. For all that she appeared relaxed, social, cheerful, he hadn't heard a single word out of her mouth tonight that didn't serve her goals. So much self-control in one so secretly strained was almost disturbing.
Who is "he"?
Who is XXX/she?
Why is XXX secretly strained?

Ok one more guess, then.

Who is "he"? - Mark
Who is XXX/she? - Cordelia
Why is XXX secretly strained? - I think this is Mirror Dance? And as I recall, there are several reasons, the biggest being Miles's death, Aral's health problem (was it a heart attack or a stroke? I forget), and pretty much everything about Mark at this point.

Hm ... This sounds extremely plausible to me, particularly considering the, at that time, multiple straining events with very unpredictible future results.

Jolly good show, Sarsaparilla. I would stick with it.

Sarsaparilla got it! Not only was Miles dead, at that point they'd found his cryochamber, empty. And Aral was being a bad patient at ImpMil while waiting for his new heart to grow. I rather think having Mark there would actually ease some of Cordelia's strain, however much it might add to the *reader's* strain!

I guess I was thinking of Mark in terms of a would-be assassin who is sure to be mistrusted and disliked by all the people at the party Cordelia is working. But I think you're right- being Cordelia, she would take comfort from having him around.

On to the next quote:
He wondered if she'd accept hush-money, and if so, how much it would be.
Book?
Who is he?
Who is she?
Hush-money for what?

Book? Brothers in Arms.
Who is he? Miles Vorkosigan, acting in his Admiral Naismith persona.
Who is she? The clerk at the wine shop in London.
Hush-money for what? The fact Private Danio and (ranks unknown) Yalen and Xaveria have taken her hostage and tried to rob the store after the computer refused to accept their credit cards.

"Uhg," said ABC, revolted. "On 789, DEF is considered a 456."

Book?
Who is ABC?
What/where is 789?
What is DEF?
What is 456?

I've been away for a while and need to ask: Are "Captain Vorpatirl's Alliance" and "Cryoburn" able to used in the game?

Also, apparently I've forgotten how to format this thing... :(

I'm afraid not, although that sentence works perfectly. I never noticed that some characters in the Vorkoverse have the same type of pronunciation before, lol.

Re: the quote, I do not yet have a clear idea (but I am working at it)
Re: what books are OK, Cryoburn had been OK for quite a while; did we make an official declaration about _CVA_ ? I am not sure but since it is already published in french translation, it certainly means it should be OK by now...

Edit:
Book : the collection "Azazel", by I. Asimov; specifically the story "Logic is Logic"
ABC : Azazel
789 : where he comes from (some kind of parallel Universe, it would seem)
DEF : speaking with a foreign accent
456 : a capital crime

:slap:
I'll try to do better next time....

OK, more seriously now, but I did not check

Book : Warrior's Apprentice
ABC : Miles
789 : Barrayar
DEF : an oral contract
456 : the best kind

context: when some Felician officer did not, at first, agree to honor Miles' contract with the late Major Daum (though he did, eventually... after all the money was worthless, anyway)
Human is as human does....Animals don't weep, Nine

A hint, perhaps.

"Uhg," said ABC, revolted. "On 789, DEF is considered a 456."
She raised her eyebrows. "Oh, yeah? What 456?"

Book?
Who is ABC?
What/where is 789?
What is DEF?
What is 456?
And who is "She"?

Welcome back, JKCade!

My stab at it:

Book: Ethan of Athos
ABC: Ethan
She: Quinn
789: Athos
456: sin
DEF: cloning

Ha! Didn't think I had it for a second there till I remembered the sin was vanity.

Might not be the right quote, but I bet it's another instance that will work.

On a side note, I'm pretty sure we've had quotes from Captain Vorpatril's Alliance, so if we didn't vote on it, it snuck in anyway, kind of like Byerly.
Waiting patiently for the next Lois McMaster Bujold book.

Welcome back ! It was a nice quote, too !

To update sherlocks, go to this page
http://ibdof.com/viewtopic.php?p=1892957#p1892957

The easiest is to "quote" it, remove the quotes, and update. Don't forget to check the "boldface".
