Book is Cetaganda
He/I, an officer and a nobleman, is Lieutenant Lord Vorkosigan a.k.a. Miles
Tasteless is the view of Eta Ceta from orbit, especially the night side, all covered with city light 'like a woman weighted down with too much jewelry".

Book?X suppressed a facetious set-up starting with, Kneel and knock your forehead three times on the floor before speaking, that's what the General Staff does, and said instead, "Just stand up straight and speak the truth. Try to be clear. He'll take it from there. He does not, after all" X's lips twitched "lack experience."
Who is X,
Whom does X talk to?
Who is "He"?
Bonus:
In a later book, X is reminded of this exchange by the person talked to here.
What book? You must give some context to win the bonus.
Human is as human does....Animals don't weep, Nine

The Mountains of Mourning, Miles (x), he is talking to Harra (the mourning mother), and Count Vorkosigan is the "he".
I don't know the answer to the bonus question.
I don't know the answer to the bonus question.

Memory, when Miles visited Harra's daughter's grave. When he asked Harra how she survived.voralfred wrote: Bonus:

I don't know is that enough

Your answer is correct, but insufficient for the bonus. Maybe I was not clear enough. Why, exactly, did Harra remind Miles of this particular sentence he had told her?
And what about the old bonus? Any idea?
Hints: one allusion is so short that one cannot know what it is about without knowing a lot of context. The other allusion... how to put it.... comes out of context!

Old exchange is: Stand straight and speak truth. Miles lied, so Harra remind him his own wordsvoralfred wrote:Your answer is correct, but insufficient for the bonus. Maybe I was not clear enough. Why, exactly, did Harra remind Miles of this particular sentence he had told her?

Well the operation is the "Sector IV" affair. In BiA, Miles is saved from Destang's anger because a mercenary fleet has turned to piracy and hijacking, and were holding passengers from a Tau Cetan vessel hostage, including some Barrayarans. The Sector IV affair is also referenced in the glue pages of Borders of Infinity, since it was the operation Miles returned from with broken arms, but I'm not quite certain if it is actually named. I think we know it was the Sector IV affair primarily from the chronological sequence. Finally, in Memory, when Illyan's chip is failing he keeps coming back to the rescue of the passengers, but again I'm not sure if it's referred to as Sector IV or just as the hijacked Tau Cetan ship. I think the important passenger was Lady Vorvane and her children (I think it was Vorvane without the y, whereas Ekaterin was Vorvayne with the y, but this is from memory).voralfred wrote:Edit: seriously now, I decided I could add a bonus question:
LMB does not describe the operation, but alludes to it in two more different boooks. Just naming these books is not enough, you have to give some context; how much context is for me to decide.
Sorry for my long absences. I have health problems so my participation is erratic. Unfortunately, that's not likely to change. But my addiction to LMB isn't going to change either, so I do keep coming back!voralfred wrote:Where are all the other players, Blackwing, risi, clong.... ?

Well, this is exactly what I was expecting.risi wrote: Well the operation is the "Sector IV" affair. You are quite right, in the "glue pages" of BoI, Illyan does not say explicitly what mission he is referring to, but from the chronology it can only be the Sector IV affair (this is clearer in the chronology appended at the end of the books than in the text itself). And in Memory, even if "Sector IV" is not mentioned, it is clearly the same mission.
So you get the 1/2 point bonus!
Well, I do hope you'll get better eventually. And we'll always enjoy your coming back.risi wrote:Sorry for my long absences. I have health problems so my participation is erratic. She (X) is Taura talking to (Y) Miles. The book is Memory. She is acting as bodyguard escorting him back to Barrayar. They've just finished eating and are going back to bedGhost wrote:All,

Who is XXX? (xxx1 is just the pronoun for XXX)
Why is XXX amused?

I recognize the quote at once:
Xxx is Elli Qu- aka Elli Quinn quoted by Miles to Ekaterin -which is why he cut the name in the middle- about terraforming planets rather than designing gardens.
But I had to check which book. It is Komarr, not Civil Campaign.

Who is XXX?
Italics means this is a thought, not a dialogue. Whom is XXX thinking about?
