Re: LMB Quote Game
Since I answer late, I'll give two clues :
- It's not in TSK
- The speaker only appears in two books, and the listener only in this one.

Re: LMB Quote Game
Well, I have thought it out carefully. This definitely sounds like Ista.
It is not in CoC and I cannot put my hand on my copy of PoS. But I bet it should be there.
Talking to whom? None of the dy Gura brothers, since they also appear in CoC. To dy Cabon ? Unlikely.
Down to Ilvin, Arhys or Cattilara. I don't think it is Cattilara.
But I really have no preference between Arhys or Ilvin.

Re: LMB Quote Game
Well, I'm not giving an actual quote, I'll do it EPS's way.
Because I am correcting the translations of the Vorkosigan Saga, I have a strong sensitivity to verbs which are hard to translate into french.
So I know for a fact that the verb "unhand" appears exactly twice in the Vorkosigan Saga (since I do not correct translations of the other books, I don't know how often it appears in them.)
In both cases the word is uttered by a character who tells another one to unhand a third one.
So 1/2
for each utterance of "unhand", with book, and the three characters concerned.
If one player gives one instance and another one gives the other one, then by definition the first one is easier to find, so the next quote goes to the player who answers second.
If there are more examples in the other series (or in Spirit Ring), each extra example (book and enough context for me to find it easily) brings a further bonus of 1/2
but never the quote, whatever the number of such examples from a single player. Bonus can be presented even before the main quesiton is solved.

Re: LMB Quote Game
Well I have no idea about the other one, but I vividly remember the one in Captain Vorpatril's Alliance, because it comes right before the end of the sample we got before the book came out.
So that would be Ivan, telling Komarran security to "Unhand Lady Vorpatril!" aka Tej. In true Ivan fashion.

Re: LMB Quote Game
Well, that's correct ! So you deserve one half
which I will award when the second instance is given.
As I have said, the next quote is for the person who finds that other instance...

Re: LMB Quote Game
I have the other, but I posted the quote before : would it be ok for me to answer, and for sarsaparilla to get the next quote ?
Re: LMB Quote Game
Well, in this case the usual anti-"ping-pong"-rule applies.Caroline Tredez wrote:I have the other, but I posted the quote before : would it be ok for me to answer, and for sarsaparilla to get the next quote ?
You cannot answer for 5 days after my original posting. After that, you can. And anyone but you can answer right now, sarsaparilla incuded, if she guesses it at a later time. I never said that a player must post the two instances at once.
I did say that any instance gets 1/2 point, and the second instance, whether by the same player or not, gets the next quote.
Now if noone answers till March 29th, and you do at that time, the second 1/2

Anyway, to make the game more interesting to the others, I'll give right now a hint that I originally intended to give later:
In the other instance, the person to be "unhanded" is called a "lady" with a lower-case rather than a capital "l"
Indeed, she is not a Lady Vormachinchose according to barrayaran law (or custom), but she certainly deserves the qualifier.

There is not much time till Caroline may post. So to make the game even more interesting to the others, I'll give a much stronger hint than the previous one.

Caroline, yoo-hoo ?
I did offer two hints to make the game more fun but by now noone has jumped in. So do give your answer !
And if it is correct (as I assume it is) the new quote is yours to post yourself or to offer to sarsaparilla, as you prefer.

Illyan to Vormoncrief in the Vorthys House. He's bothering Ekaterin, defending her Nikki. If memory serves, the phrase would be "the lady asked you to unhand her. She shoudn't have to ask twice. Or... once."
Could sarsaparilla take the next quote, then ? I don't have my books at hand, unfortunately, but one (and my last quote already came from it).

This answer is correct, of course.
I'll update the
thread (I have not yet given sarsaparilla her 1/2 point).
Sarsaparilla, would you care to post a new quote?

Fine by me.
Taken from the book I happen to be reading right now; I read a little till I found one I liked.
Who is "he"?
Why does he want a drink?

Re: LMB Quote Game
An expansion, perhaps?
Who is XXX?
Who is YYY?
Why does he want a drink?
Book?He rose from his chair much more stiffly than he had intended; XXX made a gesture of a helping hand to his elbow, but at YYY's frown and tiny head shake, suppressed it. He didn't really need a drink, he just wanted one.

Found it ! I was under no-ping-pong rule, but it is much more than 5 days, now, so I may answer.
Book: Komarr
XXX: Tien Vorsoisson
YYY: Miles, who wants a drink because he just attended the presentation of Tien's department and collected a few hundred of thousands of words to read

Re: LMB Quote Game
Close enough that I'll give it to you.
(It was actually Lord Auditor Vorthys, not Tien.)
Voralfred gets the sherlock and the next quote!
I'm really glad you got it; my internet for the next two weeks is going to be really patchy while I travel. So that's a weight off my mind.

I cannot read, apparently....
Or rather, my memory is becoming as patchy as Simon's: between reading the line and turning to my computer to type, I forgot....
Anyway, next quote, an easy one, I think :
Book?"Now what, Xxx? I'm busy. Those who can, do; those who can't, teach."
And those who can't teach, Xxx finished silently, go into administration.
First speaker?
Xxx?

Xxx?
A hint: Xxx is not Vorthys, and the first speaker is not Tien Vorsoisson (who, anyway, would never dare to talk to Vorthys this way, though he undoubtably felt that way)
But the personality of Xxx is close to that of Vorthys, though stronger, and that of the first speaker related to that of Tien, but much, much stronger !

Re: LMB Quote Game
I'm pretty sure I know what it is, but I can't remember the name of the speaker, and I don't have a copy of this particular book (I think it's the only one I don't have, actually).
Waiting patiently for the next Lois McMaster Bujold book.

Re: LMB Quote Game
Ooh, can I play? I think I know this one.
Book? Falling Free
First speaker? That awful Bruce guy. Van Atta.
Xxx? Leo Graf!
It's when Leo has a plan and is starting to pretend to go along with Bruce instead of arguing out loud...

Re: LMB Quote Game
Welcome, and Thank you! I remembered his name started with a B, but couldn't remember what it was. (Of course, it's polite to wait for Voralfred to confirm the correct answer, just in case we're hallucinating the answer together).
Waiting patiently for the next Lois McMaster Bujold book.

Hello orchestrali !
Of course you are welcome to play.
Your answer is correct and you win your first sherlock.
Now it is your turn to post a new quote !

Re: LMB Quote Game
Here I go...
Speaker?
To whom is this said?
I think this is pretty difficult, but we clearly all have different opinions on what makes a difficult quotation. Perhaps one of you noticed this when reading because it's not original to the LMB book it's in—the first known instance of it in print was in 1709, in a piece by Alexander Pope. *I* learned this quote and its source from one of Dorothy L. Sayers' Peter Wimsey books, which I read because of their connection with the Vorkosigan books. Which I suppose is a hint! If you know which Peter Wimsey book has this same line (actually a slight variation), you will get cool points. I don't know, should I offer a bonus? This is an LMB quote game, not a DLS one.
Book?"A little learning is a dangerous thing."

In the interest of speeding things up, a little extension:
Speaker/Xxx? (Xxx is a pronoun in the quote)
To whom is the first sentence said?
Who are the candidates for congratulations? Yyy is one of them.

Speaker is Aral.
The first sentence is said to (freshly murdered) Ges Vorrutyer.
Candidates for congratulations are Cordelia and Bothari.
I've never read any Sayers, so I'm afraid I don't get any cool points. At the moment.
