Re: LMB Quote Game
Well, two out of three, I'll consider it good enough. Indeed it's Arkady to Dag, in Horizon, but about Arkady making twice the mistake of forgetting that Dag is one-handed, and unable to do certain things during the beginning of his apprenticeship.

Re: LMB Quote Game
Wow. I'm speechless. I thought it was a good guess, but I didn't think it was that close. And I'll post a new quote after I go get my daughter from school.
Waiting patiently for the next Lois McMaster Bujold book.
Re: LMB Quote Game
A little later than I intended, but next quote:
Who is speaking?
Who was thorough?
Which book?"Thorough as ever, I see."
Who is speaking?
Who was thorough?
Waiting patiently for the next Lois McMaster Bujold book.

Since it's more than two weeks, I'll take a shot rather than let it grow cold.
It sounds like Dag to Fawn in Legacy, just after she shoved their sharing knife in his thigh.

Yep, that's it. Your sherlock, and your quote next!

Then next is a short one :
Who's speaking, to whom ? What is the task being carried on ?[...] Carry on imperfectly, XXX.

Perfect, nlbarber ! You have the point and the right to post the next quote. Welcome to the game !
Re: LMB Quote Game
Hmmm....let's see. I'm afraid I don't have a good grasp of what quotes have already been done, so apologies if I should hit a repeat. Let's try this one:
What book? Who's speaking, and to whom?"..._____'s holding me responsible for you, and I can't make you do anything!"

Re: LMB Quote Game
@nlbarber : if you wish it, PM me with a valid email, and I can send to you a pdf of most quotes given here (I've not yet finished the compilation, some data are a bit raw, but there must be around 80% of the quotes, sorted by book).
And since you're new, I'll introduce you to the only subtlety of our little game : whoever gave the last quote shouldn't answer the next one for at least 5 days, to avoid a ping-pong game between only two players. So, even if I guess your quote (which I did ^^), I'm not allowed to post the answer before at least 5 days, to give the other players a chance to guess.
As for the quotes themselves, they can be from any book by Lois McMaster Bujold, except the pieces found only in "Dreamweaver's Dilemma", which is a bit hard to come by.
Speaking of which, I was wondering. Who here didn't read "Dreamweaver's Dilemma" ?

Re: LMB Quote Game
No, that's not it. Reasonable guess, though, and I had to go check to be sure LMB hadn't used the same phrase in MD as in my source.Just a gut itch. Most probably wrong.

I appreciate the welcomes. I've been lurking for a while and don't plan to be a regular Quote Game participant as my brain usually doesn't work to recall quotes in context, unless it's one often cited on the Bujold list. So, thanks for the offer, Caroline, but I'll just do a forum search before posting should I ever manage to guess one again.
Re: LMB Quote Game
Is it bad that based on Caroline knowing where the quote was, I was able to figure it out? At least, I'm fairly certain, but I have to get the book out to check.
Welcome, nlbarber! It's always good to have new participants, even if you're only going to do it occasionally. It would be much more fun if more people would play. I feel like I'm talking to myself sometimes.

@nlbarber
Welcome onboard!
It's always a great pleasure to have a new participant.
@Caroline
I did read Dreamweaver Dilemma, but that was long ago; I borrowed it from a friend, I don't own a copy of that one. So it would be hard for me to check a quote...
@SPetty
Why do you have to check? Answering away is a lot of fun, too! Noone will begrudge you for guessing wrong!

Re: LMB Quote Game
The pun in german is about "gift" (or rather, since it is a noun, "Gift") which means "poison". Now the necklace was the gift (as in: what you give as a present), and was indeed poisoned.Caroline Tredez wrote:As I was going through past posts to update my list of "already done" quotes, I found a bonus still unanswered.
The quote then was : "And do you know yet who gets the thank-you note for this gift ?", the answer was Vorbataille in Winterfair Gifts, and the bonus was "find the possible pun in German."
(....)
Current quote :
Suzette, you'd better answer now, even by guessing, since Caroline's five days are up....nlbarber wrote:Hmmm....let's see. I'm afraid I don't have a good grasp of what quotes have already been done, so apologies if I should hit a repeat. Let's try this one:

I was thinking it was Horizon, with Neeta talking to Dag about going back to New Moon Cutoff, but I'm not finding it. I might have just skipped it over (I was holding off on answering because I couldn't remember her name, or the name of the camp, or Antan Bullrush).

Re: LMB Quote Game
Well, everyone had a fair chance :
voralfred, I'll post your half-sherlock for the "Gift" next time I update that thread. I've finished reviewing past posts for my compilation, and found a last bonus unanswered, if I'm not mistaken : there are three "Dag"'s mentioned in LMB's works, that I know of, Dag Bluefield, Dag Benin, and ... ?
Barr just tried to "persuade" Berry to fire Remo, Chapter 16 of Passage."Remo, Amma's holding me responsible for you, and I can't make you do anything!" It's not fair!"
"Now you know how I've always felt about you."

Re: LMB Quote Game
Hmmmm.. I found it, but I am not sure it is fair. I am presently correcting the third volume of translation that J'Ai Lu is reprinting of the whole Saga, and just bumped into it, not looking for it, and I did not expect it at all...Caroline Tredez wrote:(...)

So as a hint for the others: the third volume will contain Cetaganda, Ethan of Athos, and the novellas Labyrinth and Borders of Infinity (not Moutains of Mourning which will be published in the second volume)

Re: LMB Quote Game
There's this Flemish expression: "Dag, Jan!", which means "You can forget that!" or "You wish!" or "Dream on!".
But I guess that's not relevant, even if there were a Flemish translation of the saga?

Glad you are still with us!
Remember: the "no-ping-pong" rule forbids you to answer Caroline's quote for five days (starting from the time she posts it).
However this exclusion period only applies to Caroline's quote. It a third party answers rapidly and posts a new quote, you are allowed to answer that one immediately, even after just a few minutes (I forgot what the exact record is ,but it was indeed that short, a few minutes, the winner answered while the asker was still online and could confirm immediately)

Re: LMB Quote Game
The record is one minute, voralfred ^^
Now let's make you all regret to have given me so much time to think
For once, it won't be just a quote.
Here are EIGHTEEN quotes :
A :
1) Falling Free
2) Shards of Honor
3 Barrayar
4) The Warrior's Apprentice
5) The Mountains of Mourning
6) The Vor Game
7) Cetaganda
8 ) Ethan of Athos
9) Labyrinth
10 )Borders of Infinity
11) Brothers in Arms
12) Mirror Dance
13) Memory
14) Komarr
15) A Civil Campaign
16) Winterfair Gifts
17) Diplomatic Immunity
18) Cryoburn
The Sherlock will got, in full, to the first one who can match all of the quotes with all of the books ^^.
Now let's make you all regret to have given me so much time to think
Here are EIGHTEEN quotes :
A :
B :The trouble with the position, he found, was that in whatever direction you looked there fell away a glassy, uncontrollable slide down to a strange future you would then have to live in.
C :People are the only mirror we have to see ourselves in. The domain of all meaning. All virtue, all evil, are contained only in people. There is none in the universe at large.
D :A rose by any other name.
E :The wounded want power, nothing else; they think it will keep them from being hurt again.
F :Let the challenge emerge, don't rush to meet what you cannot yet see.
G :I am Fortune's fool.
H :I did not fully understand the situation here.
I :I knew there'd be a jar turn up in this story somewhere.
J :And have you stopped beating your wife ?
K :That was a very, uh, knightly deed.
L :She knew perfectly well what he meant, but she wanted to see him run to his limit. All the way, damn you; spit it all out.
M :Just because we're adults doesn't automatically mean we can save you…
N :Now he will attempt to make me feel guilty. All my fault.
O :Not that every man doesn't have his price.
P :Why didn't anybody stop us ? Why aren't there more regulations about this sort of things ?
Q :All it needed was window slits and a moat. And a few bats and raven, for decoration.
R :Human being are so fragile.
The quote are literal, but things like quote marks or italics are NOT respected. There's one for each of the 18 works currently making up the Vorkosigan Saga, namely :Biology isn't destiny ?
Not anymore, it's not.
1) Falling Free
2) Shards of Honor
3 Barrayar
4) The Warrior's Apprentice
5) The Mountains of Mourning
6) The Vor Game
7) Cetaganda
8 ) Ethan of Athos

Re: LMB Quote Game
Aaaaaaarrrrrggghhhhh!
Caroline, you can't be serious! Nobody can achieve such a feat!
I recognized half-a-dozen outright, another half-dozen I might have some idea where to look at, and as for the last third (probably the largest third) I have absolutely no idea! I don't believe anyone can do that! I'm afraid that you are going to kill the game.
The idea of 18 quotes is excellent per se, but giving the sherlock and next quote for the first player who finds, by him/herself, all 18 answers, and waits to get all of them before posting a partial result will most probably stall the game for good.
So please, keep your fantastic quotes, but change your rule, so that a "collective" approach would make sense.
BTW, when was this one-minute record, since you obviously did a statistics of all previous quotes?
