In this quote there is something that does not fit in the context of Lakewalker or Farmer society. What is it?

Farmers having weapons such as a crossbow, by itself, does not seem so bizarre. Not very frequent, sure, but not so exceptional to be considered as "does not fit".
Or do you mean that a crossbow, even in a Lakewalker's hand, is too advanced a technology? It is still pretty primitive, and roughly consistent with the other technology we see in this Universe!

What I believe is that a crossbow complete with a ratchet, cranequin or windlass, however you want to call it, (not just a bow with a stock, on which the string would be pulled manually) is not inconsistent with TSK technology, so I don't see this as "does not fit"

OK, here is my proposal: it is a problem of technology-related language, not technology per se.
After firearms became common, the verb "to fire" started to be used to mean "to shoot" even if the shooting was actually performed with an obsolete,old-technology weapon, bow, crossbow, spear-thrower, you-name-it, so it does not immediately shock us that Dag speaks of "firing" an arrow, since anyone might use this terminology now. But in TSK Universe, "firing" should not mean shooting.
Is this what you had in mind, EPS?

IMHO Dag's "till I fire my first shot" is a linguistic error. I think that even today in modern English, an arrow is not "fired" with a bow!

It's been too long since I saw James Cagney, Edward G. Robinson and Jean Gabin in those three movies.

But you gave a very useful hint there.

And is it Miles in Civil Campaign referring to Richars Vorutyer?

You got the quote right, and the bonus also (movie #2) but you did not find the correct place in LMB's works.

For guessing hte correct quote you should get 1/2 point in addition to the 1/2 bonus, but the last 1/2 point and the next quote is for whoever finds the right book and passage.

Since EPS did guess the details of the quote from my initial cryptic indications, he has already won one half plus another one for the bonus (yes, second one of the Godfather trilogy)
But there is still one half , plus the next question to win by providing the exact book and context

A third hint that includes both first ones is
Lord Auditor Vorkosigan (and not Lieutenant Lord Vorkosigan nor admiral Naismith) uttered this sentence aloud, it was not just a thought
And further Miles was only acting Auditor in Memory, it is not there; so: Komarr or _CC_ or Winterfair Gifts or _DI_ or Cryoburn

Ah, I stumbled across it while re-reading Cryoburn : it's Miles to Wing-san, about Raven Durona, during his tour when Miles was playing "bribe me if you can". Wing was wondering if Raven wouldn't make any unwanted report to Miles' brother Mark. It's roughly at the end of the first third of the book (p.112 of my hardback edition).

Ok, a little hint before Voralfred plays ping-pong : there are only two persons in the closed room where this was uttered.
Second hint : the dream involved family, hospital, and battle (now that I think about it it's pretty standard for a nightmare)

Well, I gave everybody else a bit more than my 5 days so here goes:

Main question: in Brother in Arms, Miles has a horrible nightmare involving Mark, Lt Murka's severed (but talking) head and bare-handed brain transplants... so horrible he finds it an improvement to wake up even in a cell with Duv Galeni, prisoner of komarran terrorists.

Bonus: the only dream I was able to find is in _Komarr_, very beginning of chapter 2, Miles regrets to wake up too early from a dream involving Ekaterin (or, at least, Ekaterin's hair)

Actually, Miles also has some dreams in Warrior's Apprentice, when he's recovering from his ulcer surgery and the sedative allergic reaction (something about his mother telling him he can calculate it if he's Betan enough, as well as a parade of other relatives, but not his father). I recall something about him regularly having nightmares, too, though the one with Mark is the only one I remember details for.

Oh, come on!
Though the bonus does demand a rather precise knowledge of Shakespeare, there are not so many places where an excerpt from a play by him is explicitly quoted for a specific purpose! There is the fast-penta scene, where Miles uses it to evade interrogation, and where else?

Hint: Note that it has to be in a Universe that shares a past with our Earth. Even in "Spirit Ring", which can be argued to be on our Earth, Fiametta might quote Dante, but Shakespeare would be in her future, not her past!

True, the original one is not a difficult one (once I stopped thinking, "but I don't know Richard III"). Not sure about the bonus. I'd have to read the play and see if any of the rest of it sounds familiar. While I do have a huge book of all of Shakespeare's plays, it's in the basement (how's that for a lazy excuse?).

But it's almost the weekend, and the kids take over the computer then. If no one else has it by Monday, I'll post the answer.
