An extension, then:
"It's me, don't shoot," he called in a strangled tone meant to be a whisper.
"I almost did. Why didn't you stay put?" she hissed back.
What book?
Who is speaking?
Who is she?

The second line sounds very "Quinnish"...
So in _Ethan of Athos_, the first speaker and near-victim of Elli's lightning reflexes being probably Ethan himself, (or, just possibly, Terrence Cee.)

Nope! It's neither Elli, nor in Ethan of Athos.

Try again.

What book? Shards of Honor
Who is speaking? Ensign Dubauer
Whom is he talking to? Commander Cordelia Naismith

Ensign Dubauer has just rejoined (snuck up on) Commander Naismith as she is surveying their ruined campsite after it has been attacked, at this point, by persons unknown. His presence startled her, as she had given him specific instructions to "Get down and cover me".

I hated the XXX YYY when he was alive, why am I crying?
Who thinks this?
What book?
What character is XXX YYY?

Bonus: for 1/2 point give the exact adjective + noun represented by XXX YYY

I Think XXX YYY stands for "sorry bastard".

As for who thinks/says it.

Ekaterin is much too polite to even just think it.

But it may have been Lady Donna about her brother,
or Duv Galeni about his father,
or princess Kareen about her husband,
or Baron Fell or Baron Ryoval about their common father,
or Aral about emperor Ezar,
or ... or ...
possibilities galore (rhyme unintended).

Now that I ponder it, I lean towards Aral privately saying this to Cordelia about Emperor Ezar in Barrayar.

Sorry, none of the above.
Even XXX is way off the mark.
YYY is not way off the mark, but it is not exact. Even with the correct XXX, you would not get the bonus with "bastard" since for the bonus I asked for "exact words" not "general idea"

Besisdes you are doing character assassination. Contrary to his cousin Richars and his great-great-grandfather Count Pierre Le Sanguinaire, (we know nothing about the intermediate Count Pierre), to say nothing of Admiral Gus, Count Pierre Vorrutyer the younger was a difficult character, certainly, a pain in the neck for his entourage, no doubt, but not a "sorry bastard" and Lord Donno/Lady Donna would not have called him that way. Besides, I think that, far from hating him, she had a genuine brotherly love for him, despite his character (with of course, all the brother/sister fights that could ensue, but this does not affect brotherly love). She did mention Richars' murder of Pierre's fiancee as the cause of Pierre being depressed and not taking care of his ailing heart, therefore dying while still middle-aged when proper treatment could have prolongated his life for decades, and it was clear in that context that she was sincerely sorry about that.
All the others, I agree, are both bastards and YYY, but they are not the one I mean.....

You know, I think knowing what XXX is pretty much gives the whole thing away.

I'll post it on Thursday, if no one else comes up with it before then (I know people are busy, and I want to give everyone a fair shot). It was what I thought it was, but it happened a little bit later than I thought it did.

Yes, I like to post things that only make sense if you know what I'm talking about. My husband finds it somewhat annoying. :D

One more attempt:
Mark thinks about Miles, "I hated the little sh*t when he was alive, why am I crying?", in Mirror Dance.

You get the point and the next question.

XXX is now correct, but YYY is still not, (the spirit is right, butr not the exact word)
So the bonus is till up for grabs

Nope.
BTW, James, now that the main question has been found htere is no more ping-pong rule for the bonus, you can answer now before EPS gets to the end of the long list of derogatives he certainly knows. This is all the more true for everyone else.

Incidentally, EPS, Lois does not speak Flemish so the answer is not "little snotneus" nor "little strontoor" (and don't ask me where I found these rather picturesque descriptions...)

"I hated the XXX YYY when he was alive, why am I crying?"

XXX = little
YYY = bugger

Mirror Dance, Mark has just finished a conversation with Elli as they heading back to Barrayar with Miles' body. This is before his unfortunate episode with the little blonde.

Yes, bugger, not snotneus or strontoor (don't ask!)
I added your 1/2 :sherlock: by editing the previous page, not creating another one.

Snotneus (snot or insolent kid, literally snotty nose) and snotaap (brat, literally snotty monkey) are often used Flemish words.
But the invective strontoor is quite new to me, though I understand it perfectly well. Could it be from La Flandre française?
And Google's translation to English is hilariously wide of the mark. Image

An LMB-character tells about two other people's plan to have a 2-week vacation in a middle-class prole resort, to just idle in the sun in beach chairs with drinks at hand, and indulge in more strenuous activity at night. Image
  • Who are the people told about?
    When will they go there?
Where is the unnamed resort (very broad location) and why did they choose it?
Bonus question:
What's so special about the drinks?

Ivan about his mother Lady Alys and Illyan at the end of Memory, planning to go to a little place on the South Continent between Laisa's engagement and Laisa's wedding (so after winterfair), that Illyan choose because he's never heard about it and anything not on SecImp's tabs is alright by him.

The drinks have cherries on sticks in them, I think (I don't have any memory to check right now but mine).

Yes, Caroline. You're right. Except for two little details. The resort is on the south coast and the drink has a stick with fruit.

That makes it your move.

Cheers.
