What book was this? [Solved]

Read a book recently - [as in - within the last 2 years]
And for the life of me I can't remember who wrote it or the title -
The main thrust of the stroy was about a Black hole being dropped into the earth. Eventually orbiting the centre of the earth many thousands and hundreds of thousands of times - but deep inside the earths crust. Then through some technological smoke & mirrors creating an actual intelligence in the planet itself -
Pretty cool book - but I'd like to add it to the database - and review it...
Anybody got an idea what it was?

Earth by David Brin - I second the recommendation.
It's been blatantly ripped off by the movie The Core - he should sue!
There is another novel - forget the name by Paul Preuss(sp?) and the rest of The Core's plot came from that.

I have not read the book in question, nor seen "The Core".
Despite this, I still feel obliged to point out that I do NOT buy into the idea of micro-singularities. IMPHO, it's scientific quackery.
I'm sure the book is enjoyable - I just dont buy into the physics you've described.

I have no opinion on micro-singularities - but they do make great fiction!
Read another book that discussed micro-singularities - several years back - don't remember much about it - except that this too had a tiny black hole orbiting the center of the earth...

As I recall, in Earth it would take millions of years for the micro black hole to start giving the inhabitants a sunburn.
Still it was a scary thought.
I wish we could discuss other Brin books. Startide Rising.

Colin - you raise an interesting point - where and how do we discuss authors/ books not given their own hone?..
I am thinking that we should open up some "general" forums that are more genre based...
This will give us more of an oppurtunity to discuss things - perhaps we are having too much segregation with defining things by author?
I will think about it - one should not act in haste!
"Never do it today if you can possibly put it off till tomorrow"
