No novelty in **** **** **** struck me more vividly during my stay there than the equality of conditions. It was easy to see the immense influence of this basic fact on the whole course of society.

Can I tell this one? I feel like it's cheating since I had to read part of it for ItAPS, but haven't read the whole book...

Yes you may. The rest of us don't recognise it.

ItAPS?

ItAPS is Introduction to Anthropology, Psychology and Sociology. Very interesting class :)

I'm pretty sure that's from Alexis de Tocqueville's (sp?) Democracy in America.

Sadly, you'll have to wait until I get home tonight. I'm just leaving work now (at 6:30 UGH)

Here we go. I don't know how many have read this, but it should be fairly easy :)

good point... here's some more.
Protective Services, federally funded and operating statewide, dealt with a variety of family ills - among them, child abuse. The branch agency for Cashell, Maryland, was housed on the outskirts of suburbia in a long, concrete building. As he pulled into his parking space that morning, the back windows already streamed with light. The spring wind that had buffeted his car on the highway shoved him bodily across the parking lot, whipping at his tweed jacket and tearing at his briefcase. Reflected in the glass doors as he strode through them was the blurred image of his six-foot, forty-year-old frame. His dark brown hair and Vandyke beard needed a trim.

tollbaby: When Rabbit Howls? It was our churches book club read for a few months ago (I never did get around to reading it, but it looked rather not-my-style).

"The rain was a slantwise curtain across the dingy street, washing soot from city walls, the taste of it metallic on the lips of the tall, thin man who walked with a loping stride close to the buildings, watching the mouths of doorways, the gaps of alleys with a narow-eyed intentness."

Ok, a hint, this book is science-fiction/fantasy, and was written before ISBN numbers were widely used (at least, my copy of this book does not have one in it).

OK, here is the next one (I think this will be fairly easy):
Until he was four years old, ********** had had a happy life. He lived peacefully with his mother and father in a beautiful house beside the sea. There were always plenty of other children for him to play with, and there was the sandy beach for him to run about on, and the ocean to paddle in. It was the perfect life for a small boy.

Sounds like something by Roald Dahl.

James and the Giant Peach?

A story has no beginning or end: arbitrarily one chooses that moment of experience from which to look back or from which to look ahead.

The author was British and the book was written in the first half of the twentieth century and would be classified as literary fiction.
