Detailed view for the Book: Dark Company (Anthology)

Blurb:
“The Monkey’s Paw” (1902) - W.W.Jacobs – If I had a dime for every anthology this story has appeared in I’d have a fleet of Rolls Royces. It is a classic and I’ve read it numerous times over the years. It really brings home the expression “Be careful what you wish for, you just might get it.”

“The Great God Pan” (1894 novella) – Arthur Machen – A doctor operates on a young girl’s brain to see if she can see the Devil. She doesn’t come out of it in her right mind. Years later there are a series of men committing suicide and they have all had relations with a mysterious woman.

“The Beckoning Fair One” (1911 novella) - Oliver Onions – An author rents an old house so he can finish his latest novel. His journalist girlfriend visits and is shocked to hear him say he wants to scrap the fifteen chapters he’s written and start all over. She has a few accidents in the house and the place may be haunted.

The author also has to deal with the small minded villagers and their gossip about the girl’s visits. The story follows his downfall. It’s a gem that should receive a wider audience.

“The Voice In The Night” (1907) – William Hope Hodgson - In the fog a man in a small boat from a nearby island rows close to a ship. The man asks for provisions and says he doesn’t want to be seen. He also tells all aboard to stay away from the island for their own good.

Other authors: Edgar Allan Poe, Joseph Sheridan Le Fanu, Henry James, M.R.James, Algernon Blackwood and H.P.Lovecraft.
