The usual form of progression in a novel is from cradle to grave, but here, Mr. Youd reverses the norm and starts his book at the graveside of Rosemary, the central character. The reader thus attends the funeral of a stranger, and is told about her life. Little by little, Rosemary's character is revealed, until by the end of the book we know her very well; perhaps too well. It is not only Rosemary whom we get to know in this fashion. There are her sons and two husbands. Clues to their characters spring from each page with the force of revelation, and the book gains from its unusual technique by keeping us in suspense since we see the action first and then its seed of thought. We want to know why it was that things turned out in a certain fashion.
