Blurb: 
A shop teacher at the mission school is bludgeoned to death in his classroom. A young boy goes missing. The missing boy's uncle, a koshare (sacred clown), is stabbed to death. An elderly man is killed in a hit and run.

Jim Chee is having reservations about working for Joe Leaphorn, but he works to locate the missing boy and to discover the perpetrator who ran down the old man. His mind wanders, though, as he is distracted by his feelings for lawyer Janet Pete and by his desire to become a shaman.
